It's not elegant, but looking in the current log file for type 111 errors on the device will show errors that are generally the result of media problems...

I know of none.

DDS tapes would send a console message.  Have not seen it happen with
DLT.  Pretty much gotta look.

(Maybe you could put a webcam on your DLT drive?)
