An excellent (and in hindsight obvious) suggestion.  As far as I know,
there is no reason why a combined SLT and FOS tape cannot be shipped
in place of the two separate tapes as is done today.

CSY would need to construct a new combined SLT/FOS master tape for the
distribution people, and there would have to be changes to the
installation instructions, but a simple letter stating that the one
tape should be used anytime the instructions call for either the SLT
or FOS tapes might do it.  Of course the additional calls to the
response center saying "where's my other tape" might or might not
outweigh the cost savings of changing the system.

Anyhow, I forwarded the relevant messages from this thread to the
manager of the data center that does all the MPE tape creation and
distribution, so you can be assured that the right person will at
least hear the suggestion.
