We're using Troy printers (an OEM version of a Lexmark, the model numbers
escape me).
What they do is add an internal font for MICR printing, and control the MICR
printing with a lock&key on the front of the unit (you can't print MICR without
the key turned to MICR printing).
They can use either IBM printer escape codes or PCL 4, which is pretty handy in
an HP environment.
We have Fantasia, but the check printing system was developed before we bought
it, so the programs print standard PCL codes. This is pretty straightforward,
and the Troy comes with some so-so manuals detailing basic PCL operation and
their MICR extensions. I would also recommend the HP LaserJet programming tech.
manuals if you've never before written a PCL-output program.
