To the HP e3000 Community,

This letter summarizes a rare but potential problem with Large File Data
Sets (LFDS) in TurboIMAGE. HP knows of no customers who are experiencing
this problem today, and our analysis indicates that the potential for
exposure is very small. Only users on Image version C.10.03 and later
who are utilizing LFDS are exposed, and generally LFDS usage is
extremely rare. Even when using LFDS, the problem only occurs when more
than 4GB of data are written to a data set.

Although we have fully implemented and tested a fix to allow LFDS to
work correctly, HP has decided not to release it. This is due in part to
the data structure changes that were required for the fix. These changes
would require significant modifications to some user applications and to
most third-party database tools. Therefore, HP instead recommends using
Jumbo data sets for those applications that require more than 4GB of
data in a single data set.

In order to prevent customers from experiencing any problems with Large
File Data Sets on C.10 versions of TurboIMAGE, HP is providing the
following:
*	A patch to TurboIMAGE (version C.10.10, Patch ID # TIXMXW7) to
disable the creation of new LFDS databases
*	An LFDS Detection Tool to aid customers in identifying at-risk
databases

If you are running on a C.10-based version of TurboIMAGE, HP recommends
that you install patch TIXMXW7. After installing this patch, the LFDS
Detection Tool will automatically be run, giving you a report on any
databases which have a potential for problems. If any at-risk databases
are found, the tool will provide a URL that has instructions for
converting those LFDS databases to Jumbo databases.

The LFDS Detection Tool is also available for download to run at your
convenience to assess whether any LFDS databases exist on your system.
You can download this tool and find more detailed information at
http://jazz.external.hp.com/LFDS. Also available on the web site is an
option to manually install a limited version of the C.10.10 patch, and
the instructions for converting LFDS databases to Jumbo databases.

I welcome your feedback and comments.

Regards,
Ross McDonald, MPE/iX R&D
Director of Engineering
