Hewlett-Packard Announces Security Bulletin Service for HP 3000 Customers

Hewlett-Packard Company is extending its HP SupportLine Security
Bulletin service to HP 3000 customers beginning March 1995.
This electronic mail service has been available to HP 9000
customers since November 1993.

HP uses the Security Bulletin service to inform its HP 9000, and
now HP 3000, customers about security vulnerabilities and
corrective counter-measures. This free service is now available
to anyone who has purchased an HP 3000 or HP 9000 system. An HP
support contract is not required to obtain Security Bulletins.

"HP established the HP SupportLine server as part of our
commitment to provide our customers with the best support
services available. We are very excited about extending this
service to our HP 3000 customers," said Todd Brue, HP
SupportLine product manager.

HP strongly recommends that its HP 3000 customers subscribe to
the Security Bulletin service as soon as possible as HP 3000
Security Bulletins will begin to be posted in March 1995.
Security Bulletins will be the primary mechanism for HP to
inform its HP 3000 and HP 9000 customers about security problems.

A security problem is a vulnerability in either the operating
system or application software that allows unauthorized
personnel to gain access to a computer system, or to circumvent
any of the mechanisms that protect the confidentiality,
integrity or availability of the information stored on the
system. Although such problems are rare, they may occur from
time to time, given the sophistication of today's operating
system environments and the increasing need to interconnect
systems.

HP places a high priority on resolving such problems.
Typically, the company will issue a Security Bulletin that
explains how to correct the problem, or describes how to obtain
a software security patch that will correct the problem.

HP 3000 customers can subscribe to the HPSL Security Bulletin
service via electronic mail by sending an e-mail message to:
