Now back to what I was doing when the PING/BREAK issue raised its ugly head.

I am trying to get the HP3000 to print to a UNIX box, the long term objective
being to create pdf output though one of the various means available on
FreeBSD. Initially I am going to try the CUPS-PDF filter. However, before I
get to that stage I have to get the spool files off the HP3000 and onto the
UNIX host.

I am using netcat on the UNIX box to create a listener on port 9100. The
initial test being to write the spooler output to a file on the listening host.

/usr/bin/nc -lk 192.168.216.41 9100 >> /var/spool/nc9100/hp3000.txt

On the HP3000 I have a network printer configured thus:

:showdev NP4179
 LDEV AVAIL OWNERSHIP VOLID DEN ASSOCIATION

 4179     SPOOLED       SPOOLER OUT

:PRINT NPCONFIG
. . .
#Hamilton FreeBSD CUPSD Network Connection (CUPS-PDF)
4179      (network_address = 192.168.216.41
           TCP_port_number = 9100
           setup_file=LJ2PORT.HPENV.SYSLOCAL
           snmp_enabled = FALSE
          )

I issued this FILE command:

FILE NCLP;DEV=NP4179

and performed this FCOPY:

FCOPY FROM=WELCOME;TO=*NCLP

Which produced this:

:SHOWOUT

DEV/CL DFID JOBNUM FNAME STATE FRM SPACE RANK PRI #C
NP4179   #O77175    #S5678  NCLP     READY         16   1  8   1
13       #O13       #S5678  $STDLIST OPENED

2 FILES:
    0 ACTIVE
    1 READY; INCLUDING 1 SPOOFLES, 0 DEFERRED
    1 OPENED; INCLUDING 0 SPOOFLES
    0 LOCKED; INCLUDING 0 SPOOFLES
    1 SPOOFLES:  16 SECTORS
OUTFENCE = 7
OUTFENCE = 6 FOR LDEV 4171
OUTFENCE = 6 FOR LDEV 4174
OUTFENCE = 6 FOR LDEV 4173
OUTFENCE = 6 FOR LDEV 4172

My question is what else do I need to configure, either on the UNIX host or on
the HP3000 so that the HP SPOOLER will actually send the SPOOL file to the
LISTENER at 192.168.216.41:9100?
