another kind soul pointed out that i really needed the 'f' option (and a reread
of my o'reilly book drilled the point home). so....i remade the tar tape using
'-cvf'' -- and even ran into the computer room (to the amu/azment of the
operators :-) to confirm i had blinky lights on the tape drive. (which i did
:-) so, i think it's safe to say -- i made a tar tape.
then boldly going where....oh never mind....i tried to 'confirm' the tar tape by
saying....
:tar '-tvf /dev/tape'
....and got the same 'type device/file name when ready' message <sigh> -
