We just [quite successfully] upgraded from an IBM OS/390 9672 to an IBM H30
which can run zOS or OS/390.
The irony is that it was supposed to be taken in for trade-in, but the
vendor doesn't want the 9672.
So anyone who wants an IBM OS/390 machine, make us an offer--it's going out
to bid.
And furthermore, we have 500 gig raid5 Hitachi 7700, also going out to bid.
So if you would like to try OS/390 [sorry, you'll have to get your own
software], you can get one for probably little more than shipping.
And no, I don't expect anyone to respond, but you never know.
By the way, I was discussing the H30 with the IBM CE who had taken a course
on the G5 processor; it turns out that it emulates both the 360 / 370 /
390 / zOS instruction set and the PC instruction set: It comes with a CD-
ROM which contains the tables of instructions for the microcode for what
processor state the CPU is running in at the time and can be an OS/390 CPU
one instant [using the EBSDIC format] and the ascii LINUX instruction set
the next; all it would take for HP3000 emulation is a setup for the LPAR
and the correct microcode stream on the CD [not that anyone would pursue
such a thing]; but in theory, the IBM processors could be running multiple
logical partitions, one of which could be MPE or, for that matter, HP-UX,
though such an application would sort of be like sending your cat to
military school or having an ashtray on your motorcycle.
