that's an interesting clue.  when you log on, but before you go into the shell,
do a 'showvar term' and see if it's defined and if it is what is it's value.

the reason that vi is working outside of the shell....is because you're outside
of the shell :-)  it's a different environment.

a couple of other things....  it might be worthwhile to do a showvar on
'hppath'....to see if .hpbin.sys is in it.  if it is, you don't need to fully
qualify vi in order to get it to run.  also, on mpe systems it's best to run it
with '-L'.  this option will cause the shell in execute /etc/profile (and
/etc/profile.local if you have it).  the default (hp supplied) version of
/etc/profile will set 'term' for you.

finally, do a 'showcatalog;user=<you_logon_id>' (like 'manager.sys').  that will
show you what udcs are set.  i'm guessing a logon udc is doing 'interesting'
things.         - d
