Along these same lines I'll point out that the currently-available-in-beta
3.0 version of VMWare (www.vmware.com) will allow you to do things like run
Linux in a virtual machine on top of Windows 2000 and access CD-R[W] drives
from the guest OS, so you could use this to run a Linux CD writer program on
a machine which primarily runs Windows.
Also with 3.0 you can take an ISO image and "mount" it in a virtual CD-ROM
drive which then looks like real hardware to the "guest" OS running in the
virtual machine. So, for example, you could download a .iso image of the
latest RedHat release and install and run it in a VM without ever having to
produce a physical CD.
VMware costs about $300.
