If I recall, the progression was something like:
MPE-A, MPE-B, MPE-C, MPE-II, MPE-III, MPE-IV, MPE-V, MPE-V/E,
then with RISC architecture - MPE/XL, MPE/iX (with the addition of POS'IX').
There were various MIT releases which were numbers, with an occasional
name (Q-MIT) sneaking in once in awhile. With MPE/XL, the release
versions began the current numbering pattern, starting with 1.0, and so on.
Essentially, all were versions of HP's Multi-Programming Executive operating
system, hence the TLA of 'MPE'.
