Unfortunately, the hosts in question are OS/390 and OS/400, not MPE (why
would you ever move data from a perfectly good system?), or I would be more
hopeful about putting together a reasonably reliable solution. Part of the
problem is that I am working directly with application programmers who tend
not to know how to schedule jobs and events or write ftp scripts, and are
not particularly motivated to learn. The ftping we now do involved me
digging around on the IBM site for documentation to figure out our uploads,
and even one issue for our downloads.

Also, our processing happens within an EDI solution, and any scripting has
to be retrofitted into its scheduling capabilities (so Wirt's solution,
while a good one, unfortunately might not work in this situation, at least
not without adding something to trigger a sleeping process). It does look
now like our ftp to download the file will need to run and repeat within a
window, which is both a pity and a problem in its own right, but may be the
best we can hope for.

I still welcome votes in favor of what has already been proposed (probably
best done off list), or further refinements, and of course, any new ideas.

I'm actually taking time off this week,
so why am I checking email?

Maybe someone else can come up with a way to start a process on the PC
from
the HP3000?
