I realized after posting my last message that I had made an error of my own.  I
said that none of the crew knew the truth about their mission, but actually the
three astronauts who were in hibernation did know.  That's why it was necessary
for HAL to kill them too, instead of just the two who were awake and knew about
his mistake with the AE-35.
