Sounds like you have a reasonable amount of memory, and other factors
condusive to good performance.
One thing you may want to check is "runaway" I/O activity associated with
DTC's and 1-word files in PUB.SYS, often (though, not always, I believe)
beginning with the letter "H".
One test you can perform to see if you have this problem:
Boot your system and do not allow any jobs or sessions to run. Stay near
your HP3000 and look for extensive disk i/o activity (Your should see
flashing green lights on your internal or external SCSI drives).
If you have a performance monitoring tool, such as SOS or Glance, you will
see extremely heavy I/O activity associated with a single PIN (I don't
recall the number).
Further examination of this pin reveals very heavy I/O activity to these
aforementioned 1-word files in PUB.SYS.
I have seen this problem twice - and it turned out that the problem was
rectified - in both cases - by changing a faulty tranceiver attached to a DTC.
And if you are experiencing this problem, it will bring your system to its
knees.
If you have recently changed your DTC's from 10-base-2 to 10-base-T, this
would be a clue.
One more thing to check. If you have users who are in the habit of turning
off their pc's during a vt session, they may be causing execessive 3000 CPU
activity, which can also bring a system to its knees.
Hope this helps.
