XDB and Berkeley Sockets

Every time I try to debug a C programme which uses Berkeley Sockets using
xdb, it refuses to let me connect to a socket, as it keeps coming back with
'Bad file number'. The programmes always work fine outside xdb.

Is there some way I can me xdb debug a sockets programme?
