Reminds me of a anecdote Vladimir told me once.  He used to work in what
he called the Soviet version of ALGOL.  Seems computer time was precious,
and like all good things in the Soviet system, would succumb to the black
market.  Programmers would trade their personal computer CPU seconds for
cigarettes, or whatever...
