I must disagree with Mr. Rosenblatt about Raid-1 being required for the
boot disk. Raid-1 is not required for LDEV 1 no matter if it is or isn't the
boot path. We have 2 out 5 HP3000s fully on our Symmetrix with totally
Raid-S drives. The LDEV 1 boot paths also are not standalone. The 3rd
machine on our Symmetrix is our production machine and it is fully Raid-1.
The 4th machine is off site as disaster recovery and is currently on Raid-1
with a project underway to convert it entirely to Raid-S on the offsite
Symmetrix. The 5th machine is a conglomeration of spare drives and doesn't
fit into this discussion (just for the curious that was keeping count).

storage array

I concur with 'Mr. Constantino' as well. Very good descriptions and advice.
RAID-1 is the key for performance although RAID-S (EMC's version of RAID-5)
is suitable for non-io intensive applications.

The ldev 1 boot path does not have to be standalone and is HP supported for
up
to three ldevs on the boot path.

I would also point out that the XP disk frames do not have the RAID-1 or 3
ldev
limitations on the boot path. RAID-5 works extremely well for us and has
given us
excellent performance.

Mr. Constantino's advice is excellent. I would just like to add that not
only is Raid 1 recommended it is required if the boot disc is on the
Symmetrix. The boot path should also be configured to stand alone to
minimize contention.

Testing HAFO on Symmetrix is our next project here at EMC. I will keep
everyone informed.
