File Transfer Protoco
sorry, wrong....it's been fixed.  behold:

:ftp
File Transfer Protocol [A0012H14] (C) Hewlett-Packard Co. 2002 [PASSIVE SUPPORT]
ftp> timeout 5
Connection time-out value set to 5 seconds. (FTPINFO 49)
ftp> open foo
Cannot connect to host: foo (FTPERR 9)
Error opening connection to the server. (FTPERR 66)
ftp> quit
:showvar ftp@
FTPLASTERR = -66
FTPXFERFILES = 0
FTPREQFILES = 0
FTPREPLACE = TRUE
FTPLASTMSG = Error opening connection to the server. (FTPERR 66)

it's a bit hard to show...but there really was a 5 second pause between 'open foo' and getting the 'cannot connect' message.

the gr'd patches -- ftphdf6 (6.5) and ftphdg4 (7.5) -- (which contain this enhancement) are *freely* available on the itrc <ahem> (and ftp is probably the easiest thing on your systems to patch, btw. this is one of the few times that i'd recommend using autopat instead of "staging is our friend" patch/ix.) - d

ps, someone asked about why ping ahead of time. yes, it's true....pinging first doesn't guarantee that the ftp will work. however, if the ping fails, you know with certainty that the ftp would fail as well. if the ping works, odds are in your favor that the ftp will work as well.

(Also recall in a prior message, setting FTP TIMEOUT does not work,
prior to getting a connection.)
