We had this same situation come up years ago (the HPIB "washing machine"
drives on a Series 58), and what you describe is pretty much exactly what
happened: the CE came out, used one of his utilities to copy the disk to
tape, replaced the cartridge, and restored that disk. No idea what the
utility was, or if there's an equivalent procedure for current hardware.
