As promised earlier, here are some specifics for the scheduled move of
[log in to unmask] to [log in to unmask] on Thursday, 9-26-96:

* Our current Listserv software, the original variant designed around
the Bitnet network, is being replaced by the more current TCP/IP-based
version of the software since UTC is leaving Bitnet the end of this
month (September).

* Due to cost considerations of the alternatives and overhead incurred
by placing Listserv on a sendmail-based Unix box, we chose a dedicated
NT server for mailing lists and campus-wide outbound SMTP mail running
<plug> Listserv/NT and LSMTP/NT from LSoft Inc (http://www.lsoft.com) on
a Micron 200Mhz Pentium Pro server </plug>. For the record, we had the
option of putting this on any of several heavy-metal Sun Solaris servers
as well, but the sendmail issue (performance and administration) canned
that idea.

* There is no need to unsubscribe/resubscribe. The list and its
archives will be moved to raven. Mail to [log in to unmask] will be
forwarded to raven for at least the remainder of the year. We have
already moved many lists and things seem to be stable (knock on wood)
but I have held off on hp3000-l until last since I must also co-ordinate
the netnews gateway. Current plans are to switch at 11:00 AM EDT on
Thu, 26 Sep 96.

* The only current "quirk" is that mail sent to [log in to unmask]
will NOT be forwarded to raven for a few days until we finish cleaning
house on utcvm. At that point we WILL forward listserv@utcvm over to
listserv@raven; sorry for the confusion, we're doing the best we can on
a short schedule.

* Those of you who have advertised HP3000-L in print, in URLs, or
whatever form are probably cursing under their breath at this point.
Before you go changing all of your documentation from "utcvm" to "raven"
let me state we are working on mail aliasing a "permanent" address form
of simply [log in to unmask]@utc.edu for purposes of publication
ONLY... we don't want to use these aliases in regular operation (it
would load our ph/qi server) but would serve as a more permanent anchor
of reference. Technically this is trivial; we're just pondering whether
or not these aliases will affect some applications we have in place
which use the ph/qi database such as campus-wide e-mail (you don't
really want to receive our "To all faculty and staff" notices, do you?
:-) ).

* The utcvm forwarding will remain until at least the end of the year
when the physical machine is scheduled to go away. At that time we may
alias utcvm to raven (no promises, but most likely) to minimize
confusion over old references.

I will send a notice out (via raven) when the list is operational over
there; after that time you should start sending postings and so forth to
the listserv and/or hp3000-l at raven.utc.edu, not utcvm.utc.edu. We
may lose a few messages in the archives during the transition, as well
as some usenet postings/echoes, but I hope that is the extent of the
trouble.

Seeya tomorrow (hopefully!)....
