Thanks to all who responded, to this message and to the emails I sent.

Yes, HP-IB was always the best way to hook printers to an HP3000 if you
really wanted to control the printers. In my previous job, we had
switched to networked printers off of JetDirect boxes. We only had
MPE/iX 5.0 so we were still using NP92 to make that work. If all you
were doing was printing greenbar, it worked fine. The awkwardness we
found was with special forms printing.

But to the point...

Those 256x printers had centronics parallel interfaces talking to the
JetDirect boxes. The settings were the same for printing direct from a
PC as for printing from the JetDirect boxes. I convinced someone who is
sitll working there to print out the self test page from one of these
printers and give it to me.

Config byte 20 should be set to 4. Bytes 21-29 should all be 0. I made
this change to the 2566 I am currently working with and it started
running just fine. This one is attached to a Win98 box and is being
shared in a small MS network.
