hi!

ok....so i *think* we wrote to a tape using tar using this
command:

:tar '-cv /dev/tape - ' < dsgx

(dsgx contains a list(f-able collection) of file names)

the reason i think tar worked is because i got this back....

a /dev/tape 4146 blocks
TAR.HPBIN.SYS: /dev/tape: shrank in size
a /SYS/PUB/ACCTJOBS 1 block
a /SYS/PUB/ADAGERFW 41 blocks
TAR.HPBIN.SYS: input file "/SYS/PUB/AIFKUF": System call
error
a /SYS/PUB/ANSTART 3 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/ANSTAT 4 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/ANSTOP 2 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/ANUTIL 123 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/ASOCTBL 86 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/ATCUT000 67 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/ATCUTIL 747 blocks
a /SYS/PUB/AUTOHIST 11 blocks

while the above was being displayed, i could see (via
showdev's) that the tape's availablility went to 'unavail'
(like expected). although, i have to confess that i didn't
check to see if the lights were blinking on the front of the
tape drive....

so....how to check the 'quality' of this tape? see if it
can be read back in. so....

:tar '-tv /dev/tape' (ie, just give me the
table of contents)
0 blocks
If you want to go on, type device/file name when ready
/dev/tape <---- i typed that in
0 blocks
If you want to go on, type device/file name when ready
<<snip ad nauseum>>

as best as i can tell, i'll be asked for a device/filename
forever. so -- what's the next piece to the
puzzle? - d

Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are.
