In a previous life we had a similar setup. When the
system 'stopped' one evening the RC and engineer put the blame on the
drive. Since we were about to do the backup (24 hour*7 shop) this was
not a good sign, a reload was not the best solution. In a last ditch
attempt to avert the reload we took the drives out, re-inserted them and
restarted, a number of times. Eventually the system booted with all
drives OK!
The engineer then took another look at the
enclosure/drives and decided it was in fact the enclosure back plane. We
ran for 2 days with another potential failure hanging over us until the
back plane was replaced. We had no more problems with the drives! I'm
not saying that drives don't fail, but sometimes it is the easiest thing
to put the blame on. Inserting a new drive may flex the back plane
enough to temporarily solve the problem, maybe!

failing

Our clients have also experienced failures of
these 4.3GB drives (Half
                        Height in a HASS).
Also usually early in the cycle - but cartainly
NO less inconvenient.

In future, it may become policy to install new
drives in a private
volume, exercise the #$%@ out of them for a few
weeks, power cycle them
a LOT, and then move them tentatively into
production, and advise the
                        client to pay HP.

                        Regards

                        Neil
