You may be a victim of MPEJXV9B.  Do a :LISTFILE ,3 to check the access counts.
MPEJXV9B leaves the access counts non-zero as a result of a recursive purge
attempt.  The permission is denied because the system thinks somebody is
still using the directory.  A reboot will clear the access counts.

I've tested patch MPEKXL0A which fixes this problem.  I don't see it listed
yet on the HP ESC web site, so it must still be alpha or beta status.  Open an
HPRC call and ask them to send you a copy.
