There was a series (Athena, Bruno, etc) but not in 1973. The original
3000 did have the MPE-A through MPE-C for all up through the 3000CX.
Then the Series-II surfaced with a whole new variant of the OS. The
original triple-word (48-bit) reals became 64-bit, and among other
things, the original CHRONOS intrinsic (returned a 3-word value) became
CLOCK/CALENDAR (double and single respectively). Same format, but no
more instructions to deal with 48-bit things.

Athena was a bit later. If I recall correctly this brought labelled
tape support, among other things. It was a rather radical change from
its predecessor, particularly in handling of the console. The major
labels of MPE changed from the A,B,C series into MPE-II, III, IV, and
finally V over the years.
