I'm surprised that MPEX allowed you to move files from one volume set to a
different volume set - or am I making an unwarranted assumption here?

The result of your scratchvol is not surprising. Access to any file in that
volumeset would be questionable.

The bottom line is that in order to replace one drive with another, you
will need to reload the volumeset involved or, use a disk clone utility to
perform the task.

I presume that Lund's clonedisk utility would permit cloning a disk drive
onto a larger capacity drive - but not the reverse.
