1. If you want pdf direct off the HP3000, "Sanface Software"
<http://www.sanface.com/> has a utility you can buy. It was $100 about
5 years ago. Should be $120 to $150 now. It works in the POSIX shell
however. You'll need to install PERL first (which is free.
For Excel, there are a couple of utilities, Sheetmate from Hillary
Software (1-800-445-5279) or Monarch. Sheetmate has a scripting
language for parsing spool files. I don't know what the heck Monarch
does but people swear by it. One needs seat licenses for Monarch, and
it runs on a PC. <http://www.datawatch.com/> Sheetmate runs on the
HP3000 and creates downloadable files.
If you're using Powerhouse or Speedware (#3 below,) you should be able
to write delimited files for download into Excel.
2. I can't comment on Suprtool's politics. But it lets you extract
data from Turbo/Image files really fast.
3. The difference between Speedware and Cognos is pretty much ...
price. Depends what you're comfortable with. I never learned
Speedware, but I know traditional Powerhouse fairly well. It was easy
to learn.
4. KSAM is a file format. Without going into detail, if you have
Powerhouse or Speedware on your machine *AND* presuming the machines
been around for a long time; access to these types of files should be
fairly well pre-set. For example: Powerhouse's Data Dictionary.
Access should be transparent, so you can report the fields in Quiz.
