Leonard,
You didn't say if the modifications you made to the dataset were
'structural' or 'content'. If 'structural' then you need to have exclusive
access. If 'content' then you can use locking to keep the users away from
the data you need to change.
You should NEVER try to replace a dataset while a database is opened. You
are putting the health of your database at serious risk.
