Michael,

Another thing to account is tape (or media).  Not an hardware expert but I
remember reading somewhere you must use either "brand new" tape or old but
"bulk erased" tape in DLT7000 to obtain "DLT7000 compression level".  So, if
you use an "old" tape that has been previously used DLT4000, DLT7000 will
"switch" in DLT4000 "compatibility mode" automatically.
