I'm surprised this "survey" hasn't really got into our press. It's just
the sort of thing that our
bourgeois snob-journos (Daily Mail speciality) would feast on.

One clue, however, is here "UKTV Gold television surveyed 3,000
people." But the questions posed weren't stated.

UKTV Gold is something special. I don't know if there's a US equivalent
- perhaps the Hallmark channel? -
 a populist but not-watched, all-repeat channel?

And another aspect of it is that actually a person can have existed and
also be a myth.
Churchill is a good example - the myth of indomitablity versus the
reality of black bouts of depression.
Richard the LionHeart even more so - the myth of good king Richard and
Robin Hood versus the
French-speaker who only spent about 2 months of his adult life in
England.

I would be astonished if out of a genuine random sample of people in
England 33% of them would have
heard of Biggles, there are no films, and the books stopped being
popular about 1961.

So thanks for that, hours of speculation about a "survey" purporting to
be news, but doubtless full of holes.
