Donald,
For the gateway to be recognized as a default gateway the "@" *MUST* be the
first entry. In fact, once you make this the default gateway the additional
entry for 172.16.4.2 is irrelevant.
Put your "@" in the first entry, validate netxport and issue the command
:NETCONTROL UPDATE=INTERNET;NET=LAN and try it a gain.

I know where to go to set it up, and I have a similar configuration to what
you provided, but I can't seem to be able to see the second network. When I
try to ping it, I get "Destination Node does not exist: error #4"
Here is a copy of what is in NMMGR.
NMMGR/3000 (B.06.00) #158 Neighbor Gateway Reachable Networks
Data: Y
When Data Flag is "N", press "Save Data" to create the data record.
Command:
Path: NETXPORT.NI.LAN.INTERNET.GATEWAY
[B 172.016 005.003] Neighbor Gateway IP Internet Address
Configured Reachable Networks
