Here's a brief (I hope ;) update on the SETI@home project:

1. BE SURE to retain your SETI@home password, if for no other
reason than to change your email address.

If you lose access to the "old" address and do not have your
password, you will need to create a new account for the new
address. While the total work units completed will always be
attributed to you, creating a new account means the new units
will be accounted for separately, and you won't be able to
show off your computing power so easily. ;)

To have your SETI@home password mailed to you (even if you
didn't know you have one), visit

      http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_passwd.html

2. A GUI client for Mac OS X was released a few days ago.
   You can download it from

      http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/macosx.html

(Mac OS X Server -- a separate animal, still uses a
   command-line version.)

   I haven't installed Mac OS X yet; I'm awaiting delivery of a
VST FireWire drive to back up everything (and to provide
additional, portable storage) before doing so.
SIDEBAR: Has anyone installed PostGreSQL and/or J2EE on Mac OS X?

3. SETI@home had 1 million registered users in August 1999,
2 million in September 2000, and is now closing in on 3 million.

4. Team HP3000-L is currently ranked 68th in the tough Club Teams
category, with John Zoltak ranking 328th over ALL users running
   SETI@home, and Sharkman 837th.

We can always use more participants! For details on how YOU can
join (though, alas, not with the help of the e3000), see

   http://software-al-dente.com/seti.html

--Glenn, who now runs SETI@home only at night in an effort
to save the rare "California electron" ;)
