This weekend, I went to the 7-11 to purchase beverages and an
interesting as well as amusing incident occurred. There was a
gentleman of middle eastern descent trying to purchase some
'scratch-off' Texas state lottery tickets from the store clerk who was
of oriental descent. It was clear that neither the patron, nor the
clerk had anything more than a trifle grasp of the English language, and
neither was able to understand the other's native tongue, so both were
having a very difficult time trying to get the patron the exact
selection of the myriad of tickets available (NOTE: scratch-off lottery
tickets come in various denominations). This exercise went on for about
5 minutes (the patron trying to tell the clerk what tickets he wanted,
and the clerk trying to confirm what the patron wanted) while other
patrons (I being one) stood in line waiting our turn. In what had to be
a staged skit from Monte Python, a kind gentleman standing in line right
behind the person trying to purchase the tickets offered to help...but
of course, the gentlemen offering to help was of Latin descent, and had
no better command of the English language than the two gentlemen he was
trying to help. This was truly priceless. It was everything I could do
to keep from laughing (I did not want to hurt anyone's feelings).
I just stood there wishing I had a hidden camera, so I could send this
scene to Jay Leno or America's Funniest Videos.
