Not hard to maintain a system by yourself with spare 'stuff'
that is the way I always did it back in the 80's Only time I was
ever in contact with
HP CEs and SEs were at social occasions!
The great thing? The stuff does not break much!
We started with a 2000F - Then - upgraded to 2000 access < 2 HP 2100
series processors>
3000 series II with 2884 discs <not much memory and 2884 disc I/O is
slow!>
3000 series II doubled memory and used 7920 drives
3000 series III w/ 7925 drives ( Univ. Wisc. River Falls WACC-B system )
3000 series 40 4833 drive
shutdown -
Now these days
a mighty mouse 37 but need good cartridge drive w/ good rollers so
other 37 stuff is wanted.
or a good reel to reel hpib tape drive
Still have our first HP2000F we upgraded to 2000 ACCESS need a 2883
disk drive or a control box thing and one of the following 7905
or 7906 os 7920 or 7925
My biggest problem? I can not pick up something like a 7970 tape
drive out of a rack and walk around with it!

That 987SX/200 sold for $225,000. The 918 sold for $13,500.
What's amazing is that hardware this cheap is still running some
companies. (Go ahead, raise your hand if you're using a 918 in production. I know
some of you are.) Kind of a dangerous amazing, unless you're buying systems
like these for parts. But amazing.
