Check very carefully about that statement about Oracle 8, I think your
getting the run around somewhere. The gateway uses the Oracle standard
sql*net protocols and looks like an Oracle 7 server.  Oracle 8 does and
must have backward compatibility to linking to Oracle 7 servers, therefore
it surely must work with the gateway, too.  It does mean running sql*net
compatible with Oracle 7, just like it would talking to an Oracle 7
server.

However, given Oracle/HP oddnesses, I can see that it might not be
"supported", but that probably just means reproducing any problem with an
Oracle 7 server talking to the gateway.
