I seem to have failed miserably with my posts. I am not blaming Winston for
the demise of "CSY/MPE/the 3000", though I would quarrel with the notion he
was just the messenger. To establish my credentials on who killed the HP
3000, I can point to writings of mine from over 10 years ago in HP
Professional magazine (remember that?) where I bemoaned HP's strategy wrt
the HP 3000.

I simply came across a piece of marketing material while organizing my files
that was being distributed less than 6 months prior to 11/14/2001 and that
had top HP executives (Carly, Ann Livermore and Duane Zitzner) extolling the
virtues of "CSY/MPE/the 3000". I noted that Winston conveniently took all
the public blame and heat ("it was my decision alone"), absolving Carly, Ann
and Duane of any complicity. He then disappeared from the sight of HP 3000
customers four months later after the 2002 Solutions Symposium leaving the
mess of shutting down a product line to Dave Wilde et al. He turned up as
Vice President and General Manager of the High Performance Computing
Division when the merger was completed (having worked on the merger "clean
room" team), a rather high profile job for someone who had so failed to keep
his division viable that HP had to renege on public promises and shut down
the division.
