This won't help you much because it is an expensive solution that takes time
to implement (assuming you even can at your location), but we used Y2K fears
in late 1999 to drive the purchase and installation of a diesel generator
with automatic switchover on power outages or brownouts. Our UPS handles the
1-2 minute transition period between power outage and the switchover to
generator. The entire IT department, all servers and communications
equipment is covered by the UPS/generator combination. Works well and lasts
as long as you can supply diesel fuel.
