."... I know that you know how rapidly this is all changing. We are already
close
to having new models every year, and with Compaq offering OS-upgradeable
PocketPCs, this will probably leave us where we are with desktop PCs. I
upgrade the OS, and then wish my hardware was faster, and eventually just
buy new hardware. And expect the upgrade path and life cycle of Windows CE
devices to be much shorter than that of PCs. Think cell phones for market
comparison. So, while it might take more than a few months for the PocketPC
to fade away, I think we would agree that things are going to be different
in two years, and very different in three. Since the new hp made what seems
to be the obvious choice, to continue the better product line, I still have
hope that inventiveness will continue apace here. CE may go away, or become
as different as XP is from Windows 3. Maybe in three years we will be
debating whether the iPAQ Pocket PC 2005 is really still the same product as
PPC 2002..."

Indeed, the follow-on to the StrongARM 206MHz processor currently in the
Pocket PCs is likely to be the new family of Xscale processors from Intel,
the Intel PXA250 Applications processor. @ 200Hmz, 300MHz or 400MHz.

I do not think the Pocket PC is going away anytime soon, after all look at
the longevity of the Palm, already several years. Some people will want to
have a small, unobtrusive Pocket PC type device available. With the
addition of wireless and it just becomes mandatory for many people. As
higher-speed wireless Internet becomes more pervasive and more economical,
the usage will grow.

This does not take away from the appeal of the Tablet PC, but I just do not
see the attraction for that form factor so far. Perhaps in time, when I get
to play with one, I will understand but for right now, when I want to do
serious work (which is most of the time,) I want a laptop with a keyboard or
better. I can type far faster than I can write or input via graffiti or
whatever, and I like a full size mouse. The form factor that intrigues me
the most right now is Mira.
