Is this an "official" limit (as published by HP) or a "physical reality"?
In the case of the 9x7 series HP's published limit for the 937, for
example, was, I believe, 192MB. They probably did this, in part, to promote
their higher end machines, like the 987, which they said could handle
768MB. However, it turns out that all machines in the 9x7 series, right
down to the 917, can actually support 1.5GB of memory.

Could something like this also be the case for the 9x8 series?
Even if the _true_ maximum for the 918 turns out to be 512MB, the original
poster may still have far less than that installed, in which case a memory
upgrade might get them a big bang for the buck. And given that they are
considering buying a new machine, it would almost certainly be worth buying
some additionally memory for their existing machine first, just to see if
that solves the problem. If it does, then they've saved lots of money. If
it doesn't, then they really won't have wasted that much, comparitively, on
the memory.
