Jeff Dowsley <[log in to unmask]> said all the way from Down Under:

>Again, a NO vote to multiple lists.

>The main sentiment here is loyalty to an evolving OS that we believe has been
>safely delivering our mission critical services for the last 20
>years. UNIX, or the POSIX interface is permitting a wider range of
>integration possibilities that are required for the 90's and beyond.

I second. Just for the record, I want to stress Jeff's use of the word
"evolving" when he refers to MPE/iX.

This evolving requires EFFORT. The main tone of this list is precisely
that we are all ready, willing, and able to do whatever it takes (including
assembling the world's largest poster to call the world's attention to our
cause) to help in the evolution of HP's wonderful operating system.

The talents and energies represented by the members of this list are truly
awesome. As I said at the IPROF Management Round Table, we are more than
happy to provide our technical expertise to complement HP's efforts. The
technical engineers at HP are more than happy to provide THEIR technical
expertise (on their own time, even).

What's missing? The full commitment of HP's top management (above CSY).
Hopefully, they will realize that they should give Cinderella the same
opportunity to attend the Royal Ball as they give to her ugly sisters.

>Don't equate gripes about UNIX as an exenophobic attitude - we know
>we need to co-exist and co-operate.

Unix (a much older operating system than MPE, don't forget) has contributed
many wonderful things. All of those college kids playing with it for a few
decades have certainly left their mark. But unix cannot even come close
(in terms of price/performance, reliability, ease of use, etc.) to MPE/iX
with IMAGE's intrinsics for the specific case of high-performance online
transaction processing (HP OLTP, what a convenient acronym! HP lawyers: If
you are lurking, you should run to the U.S. Patent Office and take off with
this catchy slogan!)

Real-life businesses depend on HP OLTP. This may not be as sexy as
Java-enabled (or ShockWave-enabled) video games on my Macintosh. But then,
again, nobody said that MPE/iX or IMAGE had to be sexy. They just have to
work reliably, economically, with ease of use and with high performance.
While being able to CONNECT to the sexy front ends (including, of course,
Java-powered ones, after the thing becomes reasonably stable). THIS is
where the strength of the HP3000 resides.

>Jeff (still can't remember the significance of all those cryptic
>UNIX command switches) D

Don't worry. yrntln: You are not the only one :-)
