According to when I got this message, Phil just recently said....

The the RS232C spec is 50 feet between devices. HP quotes this distance
limitation.

I've had modems running full modem signals with 15 foot cables and I have
had hardwired (transmit, recieve and ground) DTC users hundreds of feet
away with no problem. I would think that since the other signals used for
modems (RTS,CTS, etc.) don't toggle high/low as much as the
transmit/receive, the 50 foot spec should hold. You may be able to go
longer.

Of course, depending on cables, and other electrical interference, your
mileage may vary.
