On further reflection, this does not surprise me. Historically, the Internet
was a network setup with a preponderence of Universities and Defence sites.
The universities are notorious breeding grounds for UNIX servers and also
always being short of funds, would take to free UNIXes like a fish takes to
water. I am not aware of any site running a WFWG or Win95 as a server, but I
suspect they do exist.

Windows NT being very new, would not be as numerous as any other platform.
Also Windows NT and Backoffice cost $money$, something which the Internet
crowd abhors parting when it comes to software.

Overnight, I read a new report in this week's PC Magazine, where Compaq,
Dell, HP and IBM took top honors in a readers survey for system reliability.
They made up the A list. Congratulations HP! As for the Noteboks, Compaq and
Toshiba were the only ones on the A list, HP made the B list for Notebooks
but by a very small margin.

I suspect many of you are detecting a trend in this thread. Quality of
hardware make a decent OS (NT, Win95, UNIX) perform very well, and a great OS
(MPE) perform magnificently. Conversely, lack of quality of hardware makes
any OS perform as some people say. My desktop is a collection of good and no
so good components and is now defunct after many problems. My Notebook, a
Compaq, runs the same OS and has never, ever burped!

My HP 3000 is pure HP hardware and has never given me cause to complain. My
HP 9000 is NOT pure HP hardware and sometimes acts funny.

I am now considering replacing my desktop and I am seriously considering an
HP Vectra VL4 or a Compaq ProLinea. BTW, one of the main reason for my being
so pro-Compaq is that the main campus is 4 miles due West of the house and
their company store is 6 miles South. They are also HP 3000 users!

Kind regards,

Denys. . .
