The 4000 is available in SE-SCSI, but since the default definition on MPE
calls for
the driver to be SCSI_TAPE2_DM, you probably cannot use this device on the
3000...

Good thing he said probably because we have been using a SE DLT drive on one
of our 959s for a number of years without problems.

FWIW my preference would be to use 2 drives if you stay with DDS because of
their higher failure rate.  The problems we have with DLT drives are many
times less than any of the first 3 flavors of DDS.
