This is the datacomm equivalent of "And now, a quick wrapup of the
baseball scores: 4 to 3, 5 to 4, 8 to 1, and 7 to 6." Which side is
which? :-)
 
Ross has said more than once that his whole life is dedicated to
teaching people the "terminals transmit on pin 2." Armed with this,
the rest is usually easy to figure out :-).

The 3000 looks like a DCE (Data Communications Equipment -- a modem,
for example). So the 2-3 swap is unnecessary when connecting to a
terminal.
