John,

We handle and have been handling 200 tapes per month. For a number of
reasons, primarily cost, we attach a 3480/3490 cartridge tape drive to a PC. We
download to our network server and HP3000 pulls the files via FTP.

Here are our reasons:

Most IBM shops prefer 3490 cartridges instead of reel tapes.
3480 solution from NOVASTOR did not have a single failure for 11 years in
this configuration
3490 solution from NOVASTOR has not had a single failure for the last 4 years
The native HP3000 solution was very very pricey.
I checked at the time with Telamon and others about this solution and it
was everyone's reccommendation (1989).

Is anybody reading IBM 3480 tapes into an HPUX or MPE box? I have a need
to do so and am wondering how you're doing it.

Thanks,
