That's a good point.  Another thing to think about would be the state of the
trap subsystem.  I don't know about Java, but COBOL II/iX and C/iX have
different expectations about which traps are enabled and armed.  (See "The
COBOL Trap Mechanism and Other Languages" in Appendix H of the HP COBOL
II/XL Reference Manual.)
