   I've got the same set-up here and found the problem to be with
   the vt3k that ships with HP-UX 9.x.  The vt3k that ships with
   HP-UX 10.x has fixed the character-loss and cut-and-paste problems
   when communicating with the (HP3000) posix shell; also, you can
   enable type-ahead (even with the 9.x version) using the -t option
   of vt3k.
