One of the benefits is that it will prevent POSIX programs from dying on

errors due to insufficient contiguous disk free space.

Somebody recently ran into this when they were trying to install some
bixby.org
stuff onto a very, very fragmented MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET.
