So... if the 3 men paid $10/each for the room and got back $1/each from
the bellhop, they actually ended-up paying $9/each.  Therefore 3 * $9/ea is
$27.  Now the bellhop kept $2.  Adding this to the $27 makes the total $29.
However, the men starting out by paying $30 for the room....!
 
What happened to the other $1???
 
Jerry, this used to be an (old,old) camel joke.  The problem is there is no other
dollar.  If the desk clerk charged them $29 to begin with and the men gave him
$32, they woulkd have gotten $5 in change - $1 each and $2 to split the best they could.
You can't add the $2 to the $27.  The formual really is $30 - 5 (refund) +2 (porter) = 27
(what they actually paid.
 
The camel one involved an inheritance of thirty caels, but I can't remeber how it went.
