Hello Friends,

/CUT/DELETE/STUFF/

: On the other hand if are you getting the 42 after a period of inactivity
: could it be related to the KEEP-ALIVE settings (see recent thread on this
: list).

***********
VT ERROR 42
***********

Error messages book says "REMOTE NOT RESPONDING, CONNECTION CLOSED", The
remote (remote from 3000) VT closed the connection. The session has been
terminated.

The two most common causes of this message (99.99%) are:
  1. User powered down PC (terminated Client VT Service and TCP Transport)
with out first logging off the 3000 (:bye).

  2. Another user on the network has the same (duplicate) IP address as
your system. When this PC powers up it's TCP transport, we then
have a new mapping of IP to MAC addr of the new PCs lan card and now
when data is sent to this new client transport, it is not in the
state to expect this data and does not respond with ack, etc, so the
connection is closed and session on 3000 droped.

As far as the question about the KEEP-ALIVE, this comes into play, only
if the client TCP stops responding... This timer can be found in NMMGR
at: "Path: NETXPORT.GPROT.TCP".

[600 ] Connection Assurance Interval (Secs)
[4 ] Maximum Connection Assurance Retransmissions

Default timeout is 10 minutes for 4 retransmissions (total 40 minutes) of
client TCP not responding and NO data xfer on the TCP connection.

When a connection is dropped on a CA timeout, you should see a message
from TCP warning of a "CONNECTION ASSURANCE TIMEOUT" as well as the VT
ERROR 42.

I hope this helps.
